Watermain flushing

Kitchener Utilities flushes watermains regularly. Some watermains require cleaning to reduce the chance of discoloured water appearing from household taps. Cleaning is done by running water at a high velocity from hydrants through the watermains to clean them. No chemical cleaning agents are being used.

You can check Kitchener Utilities's schedule here to find out where and when watermain flushing is planned.

Cleaning is scheduled for April in the N2K FSA area. Work will continue from May to November in the following areas N2G, N2H, and N2M FSA's in Kitchener.  The work is performed weekedays, Monday-Friday during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Discoloured water may occur as a result of the work. You may use your water at all times during the cleaning but please minimize water use between 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. However, if you notice that your water is starting to discolour, you should discontinue use, wait an hour, then allow a hard, cold water tap to run for at least five minutes and up to 10 minutes until the water is clear. We recommend that you do not drink discoloured water.

On your scheduled cleaning, we suggest optional precautionary measures to minimize the possibility of receiving discoloured water:

  • Between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., do not use any water.  If possible, turn off the main valve at the meter in your building to prevent accidental usage.
  • Store a sufficient reserve of clear water for consumption during the above hours;
  • After 3:30 p.m., open a hard water tap to flush the system before regular water use.
  • If you have an automatic water conditioning system such as a water softener or filtration system, you may want to place them on bypass, until after your section is completed.

Please note - watermains will be turned off intermittently for short periods of time as valves are operated.

We apologize for any inconvenience. If you require additional information or you are experiencing problems, please call 519-741-2529 and select option 3.
