Converting your home to natural gas

Natural gas is an economical and environmentally friendly choice for heating your home and appliances.

There are minimum usage requirements that include a natural gas furnace, or an appliance used as the certified primary heat source to heat the building. 

Please review the Conditions of Service document for all gas servicing, meter requirements, and billing information for new gas service connections and changes to your existing gas service.

Installation charges:

  • Aid to construction fee for new gas service installations, and the cost will range based on the following factors: length of service, gas main material type, road crossing, welder, drill, and unusual site conditions. The aid to construction fee will range from $500 - $2,500 + HST per service, and will not exceed $2,500 + HST. The majority of new services will be approximately $500 + HST per service. Kitchener Utilities will be in contact with the customer after the gas application is received and a quote will be provided prior to service installation. An invoice will be issued after the gas application is received and payment will be required prior to installing the gas service.
  • meter set fee of $45.46 + HST applicable to all new gas services.

Additional charges may apply if:

  • the minimum requirements are not met;
  • you are requesting installation during frost months (see below for more information);
  • Impact barriers or over pressure cut off valve (OPCO) is required;
  • or there are unusual site conditions.

To help you work through this process, we recommend working with a certified contractor. Your contractor will be able to provide the proper information to help the application and installation of natural gas to your home run smoothly.

Please note: due to the volume of gas service requests, the gas service installation is about six to eight weeks from when the application is submitted. Services on regional roads are taking longer than eight weeks, and could take up to six months to receive a municipal consent. 

Seasonal frost charges: Dec. 15, 2019 - March 31, 2020

With freezing temperatures and frozen ground, gas service installation in the winter requires additional resources. Frozen ground generally takes twice as much time to excavate, and makes it more likely that other construction alternatives may be required to prevent damage.Therefore, contractors charge an additional cost to excavate in frost conditions. As a result, charges are applied to any services installed during the winter months. Applicants who submit an application between Nov.15, 2019 and Feb. 28, 2020, or for gas installations completed between Dec. 15, 2019 and March 31, 2020 can expect to see an invoice for the seasonal frost charges.

The frost charge of $400 + HST per service was calculated based on full depth frost with a typical length of service in these conditions. Customers who applied for service prior to Nov. 15 will not incur frost charges, regardless of whether frost is in the ground when the service is installed. Customers who applied for service after Nov. 15 will be charged $400 + HST prior to the service being installed. If the actual frost charge incurred was less than $400, a rebate will be provided. If the actual frost charge incurred was greater than $400, no further charges will apply.
