Government Legislation

Several pieces of government legislation affect the way Kitchener Utilities and the City of Kitchener deliver and charge for our services to you.

Water and Sewer Legislation

In the future in Ontario, it will be mandatory for all municipalities in the province to assess and fully recover the cost of their water and sewer services. That means the City of Kitchener is responsible for maintaining and increasing the reliability of our water and sewer systems for future generations. Built into your water and sewer rates are charges that will, over time, raise the funds needed to replace the hundreds of kilometres of pipeline that run beneath our city. For more information about the relevant legislation, go to the Sustainable Water and Sewage Systems Act.

Other Recent Legislation

Anti-scald mixing valves – All homes making changes to their plumbing systems or replacing their water heater must have an anti-scald mixing valve to regulate the temperature of hot water.

Flammable vapour water heaters – These tanks have built-in safety measures to reduce the risk of combustion if flammable substances are mistakenly released near a gas water heater.
